"A Roadmap of Interoperable Healthcare Information Systems for Pakistan"

The current HL7 V 3.0 covers 28 different healthcare domains and we have developed complete working system for laboratory domain deployed at CITI Lab Pakistan. It is against this backdrop that we are holding a meeting on defining “A Roadmap of Interoperable Healthcare Information Systems for Pakistan” at NUST SEECS on 10 July, 2009. The objective of this meeting is to bring together various stakeholders (researchers, medical professionals, IT specialists and policy makers) at national level to highlight the recent developments and challenges in designing anation-wide policy for futuristic e-Health services such as national Electronic Health Record (EHR). It is imperative to design e-Health services. The meeting is intended to share with you the progress achieved and discuss the future plans and strategies to pursue further the aforementioned objectives A meeting was held at NUST SEECS on 10 July, 2009 to promote the Health Level Seven (HL7) efforts nationally and internationally through affiliation of Pakistan to HL7. Different Stack holders from Acedemia, Industry and Govt. were invited and had a useful talk on poissibilities for building EHR for Pakistan and its feasibility study. “One Day Workshop on HL7 (Health Level 7) Healthcare Standard and Secure Electronic Medical Record Exchange and Patient Identification Solution”

School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Pakistan in collaboration with SETECS Inc USA organized a workshop on: HL7 (Health Level 7) Healthcare Standard and Secure Electronic Medical Record Exchange and Patient Identification Solution.

The workshop started with the words from Director General SEECS, Dr. Arshad Ali, and then Dr. Hafiz Farooq, Associate Professor at SEECS with joint appointment as Engineer Consultants, DTS Inc Tokyo, Japan formally started the session. He highlighted the importance of information and communication systems in healthcare and briefly explained the Health Life Horizon (HLH) Project, funded by National ICT R&D Fund which is initiated in year 2008. The purpose is to bring hospitals and clinical laboratories at the level where they can share healthcare data with any other hospital/laboratory of the world. Mr. Muhammad Afzal and Maqbool Hussain, team leads of this project shared their work and achievements in research and healthcare industry. HLH team successfully implemented the system in CITILab, a renowned laboratory having collection points at several cities of Pakistan.

Dr. Sead Muftic, the founder, president and CEO of SETECS AB, the Swedish company working in the area of security and electronic commerce system then emphasized on the security and interoperability issues in healthcare industry. He explained his contributions in making an integrated, standard based and secure system namely Secure Medical Information Exchange (MIX) System.

The workshop was attended by Mr. Arif Aslam Kundi from Ministry of IT. He shared the brief plan of the Government of Pakistan for ICT in health with the audience in the discussion. At the end, the audience and the speakers had discussion on different issues which lead to innovative ideas of future research in making healthcare industry a truly secure and interoperable.
